A new kind of card for a new kind of bank

Hello,

I’m Mark, the Art Director here at Starling and I’m very excited to share this announcement with you before the press goes live tomorrow morning…

After almost a year of designing, planning and testing, tomorrow marks the launch of our brand new debit cards for personal current account and Starling for Business customers.

A lot of work has gone into this one across the entire team here at Starling, but a particular shout out goes to our Operations Project Manager Harriet Murphy, Banking Operations Specialist James Moreton, Engineer Dean Record, as well as the wider Creative, Operations, Product and Engineering teams who helped to launch this.

And, without further ado, here it is…

NEW BANKING.

We wanted our cards to reflect the work we’re doing to turn banking on it’s head and make managing your finances a truly seamless experience. That’s why we’ve gone for a clean, sleek and simple design. It’s a new kind of card for a new kind of bank.

NEW COLOURS.

It’s a vibrant teal hue for Personal Customers and deep navy for Starling for Business Customers. Finally those with personal and business accounts will be able to tell the difference between these. We still love purple, promise!

NEW ANGLES.

After looking into how people use their cards, we’ve decided to make the card portrait to reflect this. By holding the new card like you would hold a smartphone, it’s also a nod towards being a mobile bank.

NEW LAYOUTS.

Finally, we’ve removed the embossed numbers on the front and added them to the back, because the days of checking in slips are far behind us now.

Our new cards will be rolling out to all new customers who have ordered a card since Friday evening, with the first ones are expected to arrive in the next few days.

Whilst we can’t give everyone a new card from the onset in order to control our stock, the new artwork will be shown in mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay from tomorrow.

You’ll see in our latest release that we’ve also spent some time re-designing how the Card screen looks in our app. Besides showing the new cards here, we’ve also added a Payments Limits section to this screen - which I’m told has been frequently requested here on the Starling Community!

I’ll be here on the Starling Community until 4:30 this afternoon to answer as many of your questions as possible and I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

We hope you’ll love it as much as we do.

Thanks,
Mark

#6

Fabulous - When can I get one!? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::thinking::eyes:

(Understand, what you said about new customers though!)

#7

…am I the only one who is questioning on why did you choose bright blue for the personal debit cards? What’s wrong with the purple?

But the business one is nice.

#8

I’ve been a customer for a long time. Can I order the new card?

#9

the business one is nice but I too am a little surprised they’ve dropped purple

Very nice! Loving the colours and loving the boldness to do something different by adding the card number to the back. Think you’ve answered all my questions!

#11

Looking good @Mark.Day!

I opened a business account tail end of last week. Really hoping it was Friday evening

Look superb and great effort from the teams to make this happen :ok_hand:t2:

New design looks great - can’t wait to get my hands on one!

What about Joint Accounts?

#14

Nice bold design and its great you reimagined what a card should look like.

#15

Much better then the old card.

Much more vibrant and bright.

Love it.

I almost canceled my card there to get a new one then remembered in going Croatia tomorrow… :sunny:

Anyone that comments in the first 30 mins here should get one

Hmm… disappointed :frowning: Will try to keep the following feedback constructive…

How many people have wallets that hold cards in portrait orientation? Surely it would have been more useful for any new design to have something in the top (landscape) section that identifies the account type? Granted, the colour will do this. Speaking of colour…

The teal - same colour as “that button”… it’s awful! Honestly, I thought the Monzo card looked garish… this gives it a run for its money! I really liked the purple colour.

What about joint accounts? Is there a third colour for those or will it be the same as personal accounts?

At the moment I suppose I’m a bit underwhelmed by the announcement as I don’t think a card design change should be described as “turning a corner” - that suggests something far deeper in terms of business direction. It does to me anyway. But I’m really not keen on the designs themselves.

All of that said, I’ll end on a positive and say I do like the Business card colour.

Ok then, go ahead - I’m aware I’m firmly in the minority here so ready and waiting to be shot down

Its has turned a corner, as it has turned 90 degrees…

I absolutely love the brightness and modern look of the card. I’m glad Starling Bank changed the look of the card to make it stand out. I love the colour too as its unique.

I disliked the old card as it looked too traditional, a bit like a NatWest card.

Well Done Team!
